Fifteen miles from mainland Tanzania, the Zanzibar Archipelago consists of main island Unguja, Pemba and many small islands. Zanzibar is the largest coral island off the coast of East Africa. With centuries old sailing dhows still sailing the waters and ornately wooden carved doors still decorating many homes, the scent of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg abounds. Zanzibar, “the island of spices” has a strong Arabic influence. The tropical island is about 85 km’s long and 30 km’s wide with a number of tiny islands around it, Pemba which is the largest and called Al-khudra in Arabic meaning the green island. Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar where little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses. The unique architecture of Stone Town fuses Arabic, Indian, European and African influences. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
