Mahe Island - The largest of Seychelles main islands, Mahé, is a granitic island measuring 27km in length and 8km in breadth. It is the site of Seychelles main port when a variety of goods are constantly imported and exported, and is also home to the Seychelles International Airport opened in 1971 by Queen Victoria.
The world’s smallest capital, Victoria, is also found on this island as is 90% of Seychelles 81,895 strong population. Despite its bustle (in comparison to other islands), Mahé has a treasure chest full of gems to offer tourists. Old architecture, the legendary clock tower and a busy market are just three of the offerings of this tiny capital. The Morne Seychelles National Park, created in 1979 and covering a total land area of 3045ha (20% of Mahé’s total surface area), is a gift to land lovers. It boasts the highest peak in Seychelles (910m) that watches protectively over the island and helps create the picturesque landscape for which the Seychelles is famous.
Beau Vallon Bay, Grand Anse and Anse Intendance are just a few names that make up the +65 beaches of Mahé where kaleidoscopes of blue gently lap at the heels of the powder soft beaches. Mahé has a variety of accommodation ranging from small locally run guest houses to two of the most luxurious five star properties in Seychelles. This island is sure to cater to everyone’s budgets and accommodation needs.
