Chumbe Island – 4 Star

Chumbe Island is one of  the most romantic and one of our most recommended places to stay. The island is situated Southwest of Stone Town and is the only Marine Reserve near Unguja Island. It is a non-profit organisation for the benefit of the marine wildlife in the area. All the structures and accommodation on the island have been built out of natural materials and they have won numerous awards for their eco-friendly design. There are only 7 bungalows on the island, thus ensuring that you receive personal attention at all times. What's even better is that their rates include all facilities and beverages (except alcohol) and they will teach you how to snorkel for free. The staff are excellent and knowledgeable about all aspects of the island. Their guides will take you on trips around the island and explain all sorts of aspects is detail. This truly takes you away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The island is very romantic, and due to the intimacy it is highly recommended for honeymoon couples (or anyone else).
 
The rooms
As mentioned on the previous page, there are only 7  bungalows on the island. They are all constructed out of natural materials, and designed in an eco-friendly way. All bungalows have a sea view with self contained rooms. A  remarkable feature is that they do not have power on the island, yet they manage to provide you with hot water. All bungalows are private and decorated in an African theme. They also have a fantastic balcony where you can sit and take in the fresh sea air while admiring the view. The whole place is quite an experience.

The facilities
There are various activities available:
•Snorkeling on the reefs. They form part of the marine reserve, so no diving is allowed.
•Forest trails with a guide.
•Explore historical monuments, like the lighthouse and the mosque.
•Exploration of the "intertidal zone".
•Other tours, like a Spice Tour can be arranged by the staff.
